It was 22 years ago today that the Unknown Rebel aka “Tank Man” blocked the path of tanks during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in Beijing, China.
“Tank Man” stops the advance of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, in Beijing. This photograph, taken by Jeff Widener of the Associated Press, became one of the most famous images of the 20th century, and an international symbol at the end of the Cold War era. (Wiki)
One thing most people outside of China, may or may not know about this pic. Is that inside China the pic and the event that caused it are virtually unknown by the people in that country. The government has such a fine control over the media and information in that regard that events that are seen as historical benchmarks world wide are virtually unknown there.
At my craziest moments when seeing that pic, as an American and knowing the amount of disinformation and skewed biases that exist in our own media. Is there an event like Tank Man in our own country that is known by the rest of the world that most American’s are unaware of?
I realize its a crazy thought. We’re “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” right? As crazy as it sounds through the lens of jingoism, I still have to ask myself, is there an American Tank Man? An American event that has been kept from us, but largely known by the rest of the world. Does anyone else at their worst moments have conspiratorial thoughts like this? Just a few questions and concerns.
Except those are Chinese men running away from Chinese Type 59 tanks.
